Imagine if Anakin Skywalker hadn’t turn to the Dark Side and gone all crazy… how would things have turned out?
That’s a good start… But imagine that instead of Star Wars being set in well, space- imagine it taking place in the middle ages, or perhaps in ancient Rome… Or, modern day…
What would have to change to make the story fit into that era and genre of fiction.
Try taking the characters and story and fit them into another book genre and see how it turns out.
I mean this as a writing exercise… you don’t actually have to use this example and base an original novel on it. It is simply an example.
Try imagining a world where Darcy and Elizabeth met in a 50s high school… or in the military… or in a space program… whatever floats your boat.
You can even create a mashup universe where Twilight and Harry Potter coincide. (Whatever you like can be inserted instead).
Mine would be Star Wars and probably either Pride and Prejudice or something Marvel…
The purpose is to get to know the characters and the way genre and time effects the story…
